Lung Cancer : Causes :-

Sunday, 26 February 2012

The most important cause for lung cancer is mainly related with cigarette smoking and also with the usage of tobacco. The danger of lung cancer depends upon the amount of cigarettes consumed and also the time over which smoking has occurred. Doctors uses this term as ‘smoking history’ which is nothing but the amount of cigars used per day multiplied by the number of years smoked.

Let’s explain this with a Illustration : If a person smokes 2 packs of cigarettes per day for about 10 years , then he is said to have a smoking history of 20 pack-year. The danger of lung cancer will be more with the person having 30 pack – year histories than with the 10 pack – year smoking histories. The U.S National Institute has also made a census and revealed that the person who smokes 2 or more packs of cigarettes daily , one in seven will die of lung cancer. Pipe and cigar smoking may also lead to lung cancer , but the possibility is not high as compared with cigarette smoking.

Effect of irregularity of body’s fundamental unit of life

Lung Cancer occurs due to the effect of irregularity of body’s fundamental unit of life . Usually the body keeps up a system in a regular period and if there is insufficient number of cells required, then the existing cells may divide to generate new cells. Disturbances in this system of check may lead to the event of unrestrained split up and finally develops a mass known as tumor. Tumors can be of kind and also of malignant type.

Those kind tumors are easy to separate as they do not move to other parts of the body . But then the malignant tumors used to grow rapidly and attack the other parts of the body and then pass onto the bloodstream or lymphatic system , later it spreads to the other regions of the body. The procedure of spreading of tumor cells is called as metastases. As lung cancer used to metastasize abruptly, it becomes very vital to cure for life. It can cover any organ in a human body such as the adrenal glands, liver , brain, and bones. Tumor metastases are built of cells as the primary tumor. For example, If prostate cancer passes through the bloodstream to the lungs , den it’s not called as lung cancer , Its called as metastatic prostate cancer.

Lung cancer in men and women

Lung cancer is the primary reason for death in both men and women all over the world. An amount of 222,520 new cases of lung cancer is diagnosed in U.S and approximately 177,300 deaths had took place in 2010. The National Cancer Institute has revealed that one out of every 14 men and women will be diagnosed with cancer. It is mostly a disease caused in the later stages of human life, that is almost 70% of people diagnosed with it are over 65 years of age.

While less than 3% of it occurs in the earlier stages of life. Lung cancer was not found commonly in 1930’s but the growth has been tremendous in the following decades due to tobacco , smoking increase . In the recent years many awareness programs were introduced and so the incidence of cancer had fall down , this is mainly because of the public education about the aftermath of cigarette smoking . Still , it remains at the top among the other cancers , and it has even overcame the breast cancer which is very common to cancer-related deaths in women .

Lung Cancer Prognosis

Prognosis is nothing but a chance that a patient will recover or have reoccurrence .This can help the patients and their relatives to know about its outcomes to be free from stress. It. is a medical opinion and also it gives outcome of a disease. There are many factors that affect a person's prognosis, such as the type and location of the cancer, the stage of the disease (the extent to which the cancer has metastasized, or spread) and how the cancer looks whether it is growing quickly or not and also the age factors and health conditions.

The doctor will examine the lung cancer prognosis based on the patient’s history and all such medical reports. When possible, the doctor will use stats based on groups of people whose situations are most similar to that of an individual patient. When doctors examine, they carefully consider all of the factors that could affect that person's disease and treatment, and then try to anticipate what might happen. But doctors can just predict cannot tell about the outcome perfectly for a patient.

LUNG CANCER and cigarette smoking

Lung cancer is mainly caused due to cigarette smoking. Each year it increases the death percentage which is caused due to breast, colon, and prostate. It first affects the lungs and then the other parts of the body. Since it spreads the entire body, it is difficult to treat, so it is called as the deadliest disease. It is not that low-tar cigarettes will lower the risk factor. It also occurs in people who consume secondhand smoking.

According to the American Cancer Society it is found that 3,000 non smoking people will die every year due to this disease. Early non-small cell lung cancer can survive for 5-years that are 60 to 70%. Early diagnosis will improve to outlive. It is exposure to tobacco smoke through active or passive smoking. Reduction in smoking will decrease the disease mortality rates. It also takes place through the genetic factors which plays as an important role in one who smokes. There are several differences for the types of lung cancer in both women and men. Symptoms are loss of appetite, fatigue, cough, coughing up blood.
